Sightseeing

Explore the colonial splendour of the island's two main towns, Havana and Santiago de Cuba . In Havana, the former Palace of the Captains-General is home to a fascinating museum brimming with remnants of Cuba's intriguing past, whilst Santiago de Cuba boasts the island's most famous cemetery, burial site of the revolutionary hero, Jose Marta.

Beaches

The main beach resort is Varadero, a peninsula bordered by the deep blue waters of the Atlantic . The sand is soft, golden and warmed by the brilliant Caribbean sun. Palm trees line the beach providing some welcome shade. For some old-style beach time, Baracoa , founded in 1512, is Cuba 's oldest European settlement. Lying under the palms you'll be able to catch a glimpse of some impressive Spanish forts that hint at the island's colourful Hispanic past.

Shopping

There's an array of souvenirs to choose from‚ including pottery‚ wood-carvings‚ coins and, of course, the cigars for which Cuba is famous. Rolled by hand and full of Caribbean flavour, enjoy one on the beach with a glass of delectable rum whilst contemplating the wonderful vistas.

Meals

The food here is based on the many varieties of fish that the surrounding seas supply in abundance. Add steaming rice, refried beans and crunchy vegetables and you'll have a typical stew. For some real Cuban flavours try the delicious rum-based cocktails. The 'mojito' is a particular favourite - a sugary blast with a mint and lime zing that will really give you a boost. For a quieter night sample some of the fine local coffee whilst you draw on your Cuban cigar.

Nightlife

Music is at the very heart of Cuba and the vibrant nightlife reflects this, with salsa bars, cabaret shows and nightclubs focusing on the lively rhythms of this upbeat country. Havana is undoubtedly the party hotspot, and you'll be treated to a real taste of culture, as well as a few lessons, if you venture into one of the many salsa bars and clubs that line the streets. The nightlife of Santiago de Cuba , the island's second city, is also a colourful melting pot of Latin melodies and Caribbean sound.

Cuba is a powerful mix of intoxicating sights and styles that come together to make one of the most exciting holiday destinations in the whole of the Caribbean . Just picture dramatic mountains that reach into blue skies, over 250 flawless beaches, an intriguing Afro-Cuban culture, sensual Latin rhythms, plus romantic architecture and you'll see a country of vivid contrasts.

Away from the all inclusive hotels, dining out is limited. Fresh fruit, grilled meats, rice, beans and seafood are in adequate supply, as is the locally produced rum and beer.

There is quite an array of souvenirs to choose from, including pottery, wood-carvings, coins and even the cigars that Cuba is famous for. Lavish palaces, brightly-coloured houses and 1950's Cadillacs evoke memories of pre-revolutionary Cuba . Its landscape is just as spectacular boasting soaring mountain peaks reaching towards powdery blue skies and verdant tropical flora. Cuba combines a decadent nostalgia with unparalleled natural beauty and makes for an intriguing yet relaxing getaway.

Cuba is a thrilling place to visit, but can be unpredictable at times. The electricity supply doesn't always function perfectly, public transport can be unreliable and you may find that you won't be able to get every dish advertised on various menus. Although, having said that, these details seem to pale into insignificance when you take in the aura of your fascinating surroundings.

Cuba – the idyllic Caribbean island where your holiday dreams will unfold.

"Mix the gentle pace of Caribbean life with a swinging salsa beat in vibrant Cuba . From the crumbling pastel-washed houses of Havana to the powder-soft sands of the coast, Cuba provides countless opportunities to dream and discover."

If you are looking for gourmet dining or à la carte service then Cuba may not be the ideal destination for you. Cuba is still a developing tourist destination‚ still learning how to cater for an international clientele. Please note that paintings and old books require permission for exportation from the Cultural Goods Fund and the protected black coral and turtle shell jewellery is subject to import restrictions in the UK . You are not permitted to bring DVD players or walkie-talkies into Cuba .
