All You Need To Know
"Sensational beaches vie with pine-scented hills and cosmopolitan Skiathos Town for your attention."
"Discover fantastic beaches on an unspoilt island that retains much of its wild beauty."
Skiathos is among the most scenic and verdant of the Greek islands. It has superb beaches and a lush interior of pine-clad hills that beg to be explored. There is also an air of cosmopolitan sophistication about the island no better illustrated than by chic Skiathos Town .
In its day it was the St Tropez of the Greek islands and Skiathos Town still retains much of its glamour. Sleek yachts are moored in the pretty harbour while their owners sample the fine restaurants and smart shops of a town that simply oozes class. The only road stretches from here down to the south coast and it seems every corner gives you a glimpse of another beautiful, sunny cove washed by vivid blue seas. Beneath the pine-cloaked hills and beside the most sumptuous beaches, a few tavernas nestle alongside a smattering of simple, white-washed holiday homes. So low-key you wouldn't even call them villages, these are perfect for a quiet holiday without the crowds, yet within easy reach of town.
More than 60 beaches circle the island and although some are only accessible by boat‚ almost all of them have a beach bar offering cool drinks and snacks. The beaches on the south coast are more sheltered. Vromolimnos is one of the most beautiful‚ fringed with shady pine trees. Perhaps the most popular is Koukounaries, often called the most beautiful beach in Greece , a perfect arc of sand backed by low hills and the greenest of trees, with a little harbour at one end. Achladies Bay is a haven for those who love their watersports.
Local Cuisine & Evenings Out
There are plenty of good restaurants to while away an evening in, especially in Skiathos Town . Typical Greek cuisine enjoys a high profile on most menus with the deliciously varied choice of meze an ideal way to start your meal. Fresh seafood and grilled meats are simply served with little more than a green salad, accompanied by a bottle of retsina, the favourite wine of the Greeks for centuries. Look out for little pastry pies filled with cheese or spinach, perfect for a mid-morning snack. Boutari wine and honey are also produced here and are definitely worth a try.
Nightlife centres on Skiathos Town which offers a variety of late night venues from funky discos to sophisticated bars. Elsewhere the evening entertainment is of a slower pace with the emphasis on good food and a fine view.
Shopping and Markets
Skiathos Town is the home of shopping here. There are plenty of chic boutiques to keep those with style on the mind happy, however probably the best buy is the local pottery. A great, if heavy, souvenir to take back home.
